One of the few structures left standing after the devastion of the world's first "weapon of mass destruction", the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, or A-Bomb Dome, has been preserved as a symbol of hope for the elimination of all nuclear weapons.
Daibutsu-den, Todai-ji
Nara, Japan

Todai-ji was founded in the 8th century and is Head Temple of the Kegon Sect of Buddhism. The Daibutsu-den (Great Buddha Hall) houses a 15m high bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana. Daibutsu-den is a third generation building, but despite being only two-thirds the size of the original, it remains the largest wooden structure in the world.
